Where homes are still scarce

Nationally, about as many homes are for sale today as in 2019: 5% fewer. In some of the cities where we co-own homes, it isn't close.

  • Hartford: 70% fewer homes for sale than in 2019
  • Chicago: 60% fewer
  • New Haven: 56% fewer
  • Rochester: 45% fewer
  • Milwaukee: 31% fewer

When this few homes are on the market, prices hold. Hartford is up 29% since 2022 and Milwaukee 22%, while national prices are up 4%.

It's the first number we look at when we consider a new city.
